History
In 1996, we began our quest for our farm. Relocating from California with a 6 year old and a 3 year old was quite an adventure, but we made it at last to the East, near where Stephanie had grown up. We moved to the farm in May of 1997, after an extensive search for just the right spot. Our farm had been through many incarnations over the years, including a dairy farm and a potato farm. The deed goes back to the early 1800's, when it first belonged to a Hudson Warring and his wife, Rebecca. When we pulled into the driveway that first time to meet the realtor, we all looked at each other and said, "This is it! We're home!"
Our Family
Scott, a native of California, fell in love with the area in 1985 when Stephanie brought him back for a visit and to meet her parents. Both Scott and Stephanie had a long-time dream of farming, but soon realized that California real estate, especially in the Napa/Sonoma Valley area where they lived, was out of reach, and with the lack of rainfall, farming was unsustainable. They soon set their sights on the East, with its abundance of rainfall and grass. Their sons, Alex and Ian, have grown up on the farm, and are an integral part of the operation. Ian recently finished his Music Education/Vocal Performance degree and began teaching elementary/general music last fall, and Alex is in his fifth year as a vocal music teacher. Both teach in the public schools, and both work full-time on the farm in the summers, and we couldn't get along without them! Alex has taken on the role of managing most of the livestock operation, as well as expanding the garden and CSA, and recently purchased a farm which was certified organic this year, and will fall under the umbrella of Wild Rose Farm. He is planning to add beef and pork to our operation!
Our Farm
Located high upon Catlin Hill in Owego, New York, we are a local family farm dedicated to raising wholesome and organic food. Certified organic by NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC since 2005, we raise certified organic lamb, chicken, vegetables, eggs, and Thanksgiving turkeys. Our sheep flock is registered Dorpers, and our lamb is primarily grass-fed. The chickens and turkeys are raised in outdoor movable pens, where they receive a ration of locally sourced certified organic grain, and plenty of fresh grass daily. In addition, we offer certified organic vegetables, as well. Our philosophy has always been that nature knows best, and we strive to create a space that works with natural systems and cycles, not against them.
